For launcher-related issues, see the [Launcher FAQ](/launcher/faq). ## General Game Issues There are several common causes: 1. **Missing Dependencies** - Install the [required redistributables](https://chse.dev/redists) first 2. **Windows Security Settings** - In Windows Security settings, go to **App & browser control → Exploit protection settings** and turn off "Force randomization for images". Then, go to **Device security → Core isolation details** and turn off "Memory integrity". Restart your PC after making these changes. If the game still doesn't launch, try running the game's executable as administrator (right-click → Run as administrator). 3. **Steam Required** - Some games require Steam to be running (you don't need to own the game, just have Steam open) 4. **Corrupt Files** - Verify your game files in the launcher Some games require Steam to be open, even if you downloaded them through the CB Launcher. You don't need to own the game on Steam - just have the Steam application running in the background. You can also try adding `-nosteam` to the game's launch properties, though this doesn't work for all games. For most clients (except Plutonium which requires an account), open the console using the tilde (`~`) key and type: ``` /name yourname ``` Most clients let you unlock everything instantly, though the method varies. Xbox controllers are plug-and-play on natively supported games, while PlayStation controllers and games without native support need extra setup. See the [Controller guide](/guides/controllers) for full instructions. ## HMW (HorizonMW) You may need to disable the CB Extension if you're still experiencing crashes. Open HMW game settings in the launcher and enable "Disable CB Extension". In-game, go to **Play Online → Personalization → Stats**. See the [unlock all guide](/guides/unlock-all) for other clients. Delete `config_mp.cfg` from your `players2` folder. When you load back up, you'll need to redo your settings. Then, make sure you keep **"Fill remaining memory"** turned off. This can be found in **Options → Graphics**. ## H2-Mod (MW2 Campaign Remastered) If you get crashes that show errors like `Create2DTexture(...) failed ...` or `IDXGISwapChain::Present failed: ...` when loading certain maps, try: * Disabling shader preloading **(most important)** * Lowering graphics settings * Freeing up RAM (close programs) * Updating your GPU drivers ## IW7-Mod (Infinite Warfare) You need to create a class first: 1. Click "Create Class" 2. Choose one of the rig types 3. Create your class 4. The server browser will then unlock Try verifying your game files in the launcher. This error typically indicates corrupted or missing files. Make sure Steam is open when launching the game. The client is downloading required files in the background. This may not appear to be progressing, but please wait and the game will launch once the update completes. Open the console using the tilde (`~`) key and enter: ``` map_start_fix 1 ``` ## IW6x (Ghosts) This is a known issue. Execute the `vid_restart` command in the console. ## Playing with Friends Due to these clients being separated from Steam's infrastructure, you can't add friends the traditional way. How you set one up depends first on whether your game has [native controller support](#games-with-native-controller-support). **Natively supported games** — connect your controller, then follow the section for your controller type: * **Xbox controllers:** Plug-and-play. [Jump to this method](#xbox-controllers). * **PS4 & PS5 controllers:** Need DS4Windows to work outside of Steam. [Jump to this method](#ps4--ps5-controllers). * **PS3 controllers:** Need ScpToolkit to work outside of Steam. [Jump to this method](#ps3-controllers). **Games without native support** — COD1, CODUO, COD2, COD4 (multiplayer), and MW3 (IW5-Mod) instead use [Steam Input](#games-without-native-controller-support), which maps your controller to keyboard and mouse and works with any controller. ## Games With Native Controller Support These clients have built-in controller support. Just connect your controller using the method for your controller type below — no Steam Input layout needed. * Modern Warfare (COD4) — *singleplayer only; multiplayer uses Steam Input* * World at War (T4) * Modern Warfare 2 (IW4x) * Modern Warfare 3 (IW5) — *multiplayer only; singleplayer (IW5-Mod) uses Steam Input* * Black Ops (T5) * Black Ops 2 (T6) * Ghosts (IW6x) * Advanced Warfare (S1x) * Black Ops 3 (BOIII) * Modern Warfare Remastered (H1-Mod) * Infinite Warfare (IW7-Mod) * Black Ops 4 (Project BO4) * MW2 Campaign Remastered (H2-Mod) * HorizonMW (HMW) Before using a controller on these games, disable Steam's controller support (or exit Steam completely). Go to **Steam** > **Settings** > **Controller** > **General Controller Settings** and **untick** the checkboxes shown below. Disable Steam controller support

On most of these games you still need to turn the controller on in the in-game settings before it works, usually under **Settings** > **Controls** > **Gamepad**. ## Xbox Controllers Xbox controllers are plug-and-play with the natively supported game clients. Simply plug your controller into your computer and launch the game. ## PS4 & PS5 Controllers PS4 and PS5 controllers require additional software to work outside of Steam on Windows. We'll use DS4Windows. Download [DS4Windows](https://ds4-windows.com/download/official/). We recommend the `DS4Windows_VERSION_x64.zip` file. Open the downloaded zip and copy the `DS4Windows` folder somewhere safe, like your Documents folder. Open the extracted folder, then run `DS4Windows`. Run DS4Windows

If you get a message like this, click **Yes**. .NET error prompt

Your browser will open — download the **Windows x64** version, then install it. Download .NET

If you still get an error after installing, download and run the .NET redist linked on the [DS4Windows release page](https://github.com/Ryochan7/DS4Windows/releases/latest), then try DS4Windows again. Select **Appdata** for your SaveWhere path. Select Appdata

Install the ViGEmBus driver when prompted. Install ViGEmBus

Connect your PS4 or PS5 controller to your PC. Using Bluetooth? Follow the prompts inside DS4Windows to pair. Once connected, click **Finish** on the Welcome to DS4Windows screen. Configure your controller and start DS4Windows in the main window. DS4Windows main window

Launch a game and check that your controller works. DS4Windows must be running to detect your controller, so enable it on startup in the settings. ## PS3 Controllers Like the other PlayStation controllers, PS3 controllers need additional software to work outside of Steam on Windows. There are several tools that work, but this guide uses ScpToolkit. Download [ScpToolkit](https://github.com/nefarius/ScpToolkit/releases/download/v1.7.277.16103-BETA/ScpToolkit_Setup.exe). Open the downloaded setup and click **Next** without changing any settings. At the end, click **Run Driver Installer**. Follow all the on-screen instructions and read everything carefully — you need to initialize the DualShock controller and install the required drivers. Clicking **Next** does not install anything; you have to click the install buttons shown on screen, like the one below. You can skip installs you don't need, such as Bluetooth. ScpToolkit driver installer

If your controller still isn't working, open the `ScpServer` application (in the ScpToolkit folder) and start it manually. The `ScpSettings` application lets you change settings such as rumble and joystick dead zones. ## Games Without Native Controller Support Some games have no built-in controller support. For these, you can use **Steam Input**, which maps your controller to keyboard and mouse inputs. This works for both DualSense and Xbox controllers since Steam supports both — **DS4Windows is not needed** here. | Game | Multiplayer exe | Singleplayer exe | | - | - | - | | Call of Duty (COD1) | `CoDMP.exe` | `CoDSP.exe` | | United Offensive (CODUO) | `CoDUOMP.exe` | `CoDUOSP.exe` | | Call of Duty 2 (COD2) | `CoD2MP_s.exe` | `CoD2SP_s.exe` | | Call of Duty 4 (COD4, MP only) | `iw3mp.exe` | — | | Modern Warfare 3 (IW5-Mod, SP only) | — | `iw5-mod.exe` | These are community-made layouts, not official controller support. The game still treats you as if you're playing on keyboard and mouse, since Steam Input simply sends keyboard and mouse inputs from your controller. In Steam, click **Games** > **Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library...**

Click **Browse**, then navigate to your game's install folder and select the correct exe from the table above. To find your install folder quickly, open the CB Launcher, select your game, and click **Browse Local Files**. Connect your controller, then open the game's page in your Steam library. Click the **controller icon** near the top right. Controller icon on the game page

In the layout window, click **Community Layouts** to see all public presets made for this exe by other players. Community Layouts tab

Pick a layout and apply it. Layouts made for your game will show up under their creator's name — for example, the COD1 layouts by **Synced-Spider**. Launch the game from Steam (via the non-Steam game entry you added) and your controller will work through the layout you selected. ## My Controller Still Isn't Working * Make sure the controller is enabled in the game's settings, usually under **Settings** > **Controls** > **Gamepad**. * Try your controller in an actual match rather than the menus — not all games support controllers in the menus. * Double-check that you unticked the right Steam settings (see [Games With Native Controller Support](#games-with-native-controller-support)) or fully exited Steam by right-clicking the Steam icon in the Windows taskbar tray and clicking **Exit**. Make sure the **default** profile is selected. DS4Windows profile selection

Then click **Edit**, go to the **Other** tab (far right), and make sure **Emulated Controller** is set to **Xbox 360**. DS4Windows emulated controller setting

Link your Discord account once and the launcher shows which of your Discord friends are playing, what they're playing, and gives you a **Join** or **Invite** button next to them. No IPs, no console commands, no Radmin. This is the easiest way to play together. If your client isn't in the supported list below, use the [private match guide](/guides/private-match) instead. ### Supported clients | Game | Client | Friends list | Join / Invite | | - | - | - | - | | Black Ops 3 | BOIII | Yes | Yes | | Ghosts | IW6x | Yes | Yes | | Advanced Warfare | S1x | Yes | Yes | | Modern Warfare Remastered | H1-Mod | Yes | Yes | | Infinite Warfare | IW7-Mod | Yes | Yes | | Everything else (T4, IW4x, T5, IW5, T6, CoD4x, BO4, HMW, ...) | – | Yes | No | Every client shows up on the Friends page and on your Discord profile, so friends can always see what you're playing. The **Join** and **Invite** buttons only work on the five clients above, because those are the ones CB Servers maintains. For the rest, see the [private match guide](/guides/private-match). ## Prerequisites * The CB Servers Launcher, [installed](/launcher/install) and running (not in offline mode) * A Discord account (13+) * Both players linked and with the launcher open * You and your friend must already be Discord friends * Discord's **Activity Status** (share your detected activities) enabled on both sides ## Link Your Discord Account Click **Friends** in the launcher sidebar. Click **Link launcher to Discord account**. A Discord authorization page opens in your browser. Approve the request. The launcher shows *Connecting to Discord...* and then your friends list appears. You can check the link status any time under **Settings → Discord account**, which also has the **Unlink** button. While linked, your Discord profile shows *Playing CB Launcher* with the game's artwork, name, mode, map and player count, for example **Black Ops III - Zombies on Der Eisendrache**. Your regular Discord friends see this card whether or not they use CB Launcher. ## Joining a Friend Open the **Friends** page. Each friend row shows what they're playing, and a button appears when you can get in: | Button | What it means | | - | - | | **Join** | Their match is open. One click, no approval needed. | | **Ask to Join** | They're hosting a private match that isn't open yet. Your friend gets a prompt to let you in. | | **In your game** | You're already playing together. | | *(no button)* | They're not in a joinable match, or their client doesn't support joining. | If the game isn't already running, the launcher asks to launch it first. Confirm and it starts the right game in the right mode for you. If the game was already open, you connect immediately. On a cold launch, wait at the main menu, press **Play**, and the launcher connects you as soon as the game is ready. Your friend gets a prompt in their launcher. When they approve, their match opens to friends and you connect automatically. Already in a different game or a different mode? The launcher handles it. It closes what's running and relaunches the correct game and mode before connecting, so an Advanced Warfare Survival invite works even if you're sitting in Multiplayer. ## Inviting a Friend An **Invite** button appears next to your online friends whenever your own match can be joined. Join any public/dedicated server, or host a private match and open it (see below). Go to **Friends** and click **Invite** next to the friend you want. You'll see an *Invite sent* toast. They get a popup in their launcher with **Join** and **Decline**. Accepting connects them, launching their game first if it isn't running. Inviting from a **closed** private match opens your match to friends automatically. You don't have to open it first, and it stays open afterwards. ### Hosting a private match To be joinable while hosting your own match rather than playing on a dedicated server: Launch the game through the launcher and start a private match as usual. Open the pause menu and click **Open to Friends**. On BOIII, some custom maps and mods replace the pause menu. Open the console (`~`) and run `nat_host` instead, which does the same thing. Once open, friends see **Join** instead of **Ask to Join**, and their join requests are approved silently. You can close the match again with **Close to Friends** (or `nat_host` a second time). ## Receiving Invites and Requests The launcher will get your attention even when it's in the background: * A popup in the launcher with **Join** / **Decline** (or **Approve** / **Decline** for a join request) * A Windows notification and a taskbar flash * On BOIII, a passive in-game toast telling you who invited you. Accept it from the launcher or Discord; the toast is informational only. Approving a join request while your private match is still closed will open your match to friends. The prompt says so explicitly. ## Joining from Discord You don't have to use the launcher UI at all. Because the launcher publishes real Discord rich presence, your friends can click **Join** or **Ask to Join** straight from your Discord profile card, or accept an invite in a DM. Their launcher picks it up, launches the right game, and connects them the same way. Both people still need the launcher installed, linked and running. ## In-Game Friends List (Black Ops 3) BOIII goes one step further: your CB Launcher friends appear in the game's native **Social → Friends** menu, with live presence such as *Playing Team Deathmatch on Nuk3town*, and the in-game **JOIN GAME** and **INVITE GAME** buttons work on them. The list refreshes while it's open, and the invite button only appears when an invite would actually go through. ## Troubleshooting They have Discord's **Activity Status** (share your detected activities) turned off, or their launcher isn't running. With activity sharing off you can still invite them, but you can never see or join their match. Ask them to enable it in **Discord → Settings → Activity Privacy**. Check, in order: their client is one of the five supported ones, they're actually in a match (not the menu), their match has a free slot, they haven't closed it to friends, and both launchers are open and linked. The Invite button only appears when **you** are joinable. Join a dedicated server, or host a private match. The friend also has to be online or idle on Discord. Discord limits how fast invites and join requests can be sent. Wait the number of seconds shown and try again. Make sure the launcher isn't in offline mode, which disables Discord entirely. If the notice says the friends service is unreachable, the list falls back to showing only friends currently in the launcher. It recovers on its own. Joining a friend's private match uses NAT hole punching, which works on normal home connections but can be blocked by mobile hotspots, hotel and public Wi-Fi, or a strict firewall. Allow the client through Windows Firewall, and if it still fails, fall back to [Radmin VPN or port forwarding](/guides/private-match#radmin-vpn-or-port-forwarding). ## Need Help? The connection method depends on which game you're playing: * **CB Launcher friends (easiest):** BOIII, IW6x, S1x, H1-Mod, and IW7-Mod can invite and join friends from the launcher itself. This is the recommended method and has its own guide: [Play with Friends Using CB Launcher](/guides/launcher-friends). * **Discord or a match token:** the same five clients, for players running the client directly instead of through the launcher. [Jump to this method](#playing-without-the-launcher). * **Built-in friends system:** Plutonium clients (T4, IW5, T5, T6) use their own in-game friends list. [Jump to this method](#games-with-built-in-friends). * **Radmin VPN or port forwarding:** Every other client, and a fallback for the clients above if a direct connection can't be established. [Jump to this method](#radmin-vpn-or-port-forwarding). * **External guides:** Modern Warfare 2 SP/Spec Ops (IW4-SP), Modern Warfare 3 SP/Spec Ops (IW5-Mod), and Black Ops 4 (Project BO4) each have their own external guide. [Jump to this method](#external-guides). ## Play with Friends on CB Launcher (Recommended) The following clients support joining and inviting friends **from the launcher**, with no IPs, console commands, or extra software: | Game | Client | | - | - | | Black Ops 3 | BOIII | | Ghosts | IW6x | | Advanced Warfare | S1x | | Modern Warfare Remastered | H1-Mod | | Infinite Warfare | IW7-Mod | Link your Discord account once and the launcher's **Friends** page lists your Discord friends, shows what they're playing, and gives you **Join**, **Ask to Join** and **Invite** buttons. It starts the right game in the right mode and connects you automatically, and the host doesn't have to open their match first. Linking Discord, hosting, joining, inviting, and troubleshooting Use the launcher's buttons rather than Discord's own invite and join buttons. Discord limits how fast invites and join requests can be sent, and accepting in Discord while the host's private match is still closed costs an extra approval round trip. The launcher avoids both. ## Playing Without the Launcher Use this only if you run the client directly instead of through the CB Servers Launcher, or you haven't linked your Discord account to it. It covers the same five clients as above. Connections are still made automatically through NAT hole punching — no Radmin, Hamachi, or port forwarding required. ### Hosting a Match Launch the client and start a private match as you normally would. Open the pause menu and click **Open to Friends**. Your Discord status updates to show a joinable game. Don't see the button? Some custom maps and mods (especially on BOIII) override the in-game menus. Open the console (`~`) and run `nat_host` instead — it does the exact same thing. Click the file attachment (**+**) button in a friend's DM or any text channel to send an invite. Friends can also join directly from your Discord status without an invite. Make sure Discord is running and **Activity Status** is enabled so your game shows up. Want to close the match after a friend joins? Open the pause menu and click **Close to Friends** (or run `nat_host` again in the console). ### Joining a Friend Launch the game in the same mode as the host before joining — for example, join in Zombies if they're hosting a Zombies match. Click **Join** on your friend's Discord status, or accept their invite. You'll connect automatically — no IP or console commands needed. Use this if you'd rather not use Discord, or your game isn't showing up there. Open the console (`~`) and run `nat_host`. It prints a match token: ``` [nat] opened private match to friends, token=a1b2c3d4e5f6a7b8 ``` Share that token with your friend. Open the console (`~`) and run `nat_join ` (e.g. `nat_join a1b2c3d4e5f6a7b8`). You'll connect automatically. This works when the host is on a normal home internet connection. Restrictive networks such as mobile hotspots, hotel, or public Wi-Fi can block the connection. If you can't connect, use [Radmin VPN or port forwarding](#radmin-vpn-or-port-forwarding) instead. ## Games with Built-in Friends Some clients handle private matches through their own friends system rather than direct IP connections. The method depends on which client you're playing: * **Console command:** World at War (T4) and Black Ops (T5) use a single console command. Some antivirus software may flag it as suspicious because it downloads and modifies game files. You may need to add an exception for the launcher in your antivirus settings. No, you do not need to own the games on Steam. The launcher can download all game files directly. However, if you already own the games, the launcher can use your existing installation. No! The CB Launcher allows you to download games directly without needing a torrent or Steam version. No. Our launcher is not affiliated or endorsed by IW4x, Plutonium, AlterWare, Aurora, or Horizon MW. Please do not contact the original client maintainers with support requests regarding the launcher. The CB Launcher only supports English localized game files. Multi-language support is not available at this time. If you're using an existing Steam installation with non-English language files, verifying game files through the launcher may cause issues. Switch your Steam game to English before verifying, or use a fresh download through the launcher instead. The **Auto** setting is recommended as it automatically selects the fastest server for you. If you experience slow speeds, try manually selecting your closest region (NA or EU). You can check where game files are stored by visiting the settings page for the desired game and navigating to it's install path. Click on the **"Manage Install"** button on the game page and click **Uninstall**. This will remove all the game's files. This is different from "Reset Settings" in the launcher's game options menu, which only resets launcher preferences (like game path, launch args, etc.) but does not delete the game from your PC. ## Download Issues This can happen for a few reasons: * **Server Overload** - High traffic can slow downloads significantly * **Large Files** - Some game files (especially Infinite Warfare) are 10GB+ and can stall progress bars * **Storage Type** - Downloads may be slower on HDDs vs SSDs **Solution:** Be patient and let the download continue. It may appear stuck but is still downloading in the background. If it stays stuck for hours, try restarting the download. The servers can get overloaded when many users are downloading simultaneously. Download speeds may be throttled during peak times. Make sure the closest download server to you is selected in settings. ## Troubleshooting There are several common causes: 1. **Missing Dependencies** - Install the [required redistributables](https://chse.dev/redists) first 2. **Windows Security Settings** - In Windows Security settings, go to **App & browser control → Exploit protection settings** and turn off "Force randomization for images". Then, go to **Device security → Core isolation details** and turn off "Memory integrity". Restart your PC after making these changes. If the game still doesn't launch, try running the game's executable as administrator (right-click → Run as administrator). 3. **Steam Required** - Some games require Steam to be running (you don't need to own the game, just have Steam open) 4. **Corrupt Files** - Verify your game files in the launcher Make sure you're selecting the correct folder: * For Steam games, select the game's main folder (not the Steam folder) * For torrented games, select the folder containing the game executable * The folder should contain files like the game's main `.exe` or data `.ff` files * Make sure your drivers are up to date * Try lowering graphics settings * Close unnecessary background applications * Verify your game files in the launcher ## Game-Specific Issues For questions and troubleshooting specific to individual game clients (HMW, IW7-Mod, IW6x, etc.), see the [Game Clients FAQ](/games/faq). ## Still Need Help?
